LEVEL 1 - AI-assisted development
Agents understand development objectives and execute multi-step tasks: they plan, modify files, run tools and tests, and iterate. The development team sets the intent and reviews the outcomes rather than writing every line themselves. In production, the developer transitions from a writer to a director.
LEVEL 2 - Agent-based engineering
A fully autonomous system, or a so-called code factory, is still a reality for very few development teams. However, the goal is a controlled system where multiple agents continuously produce software at scale. Standardized pipelines, guardrails, and quality gates guide the output, allowing developers to design and improve the 'factory' rather than individual features.
